Final Validation Signoff

This signoff records the current state of the recent Dragons & Distractions remediation and polish work. It keeps the confirmed wins from the validation pass, but narrows a few claims so they match the implementation exactly.

Confirmed outcomes

  • The monster index filter now initializes safely after the DOM is ready, so the earlier early-exit bug is resolved.
  • The filter now hides non-matching cards, updates a descriptive live status message, and restores the full list when cleared.
  • The filter uses a dedicated clear button instead of relying on browser-native search UI.
  • The Choose Your Monster oracle scrolls the active result into view after selection.
  • The low-stim theme has stronger contrast for small text and control states.
  • The back-to-top control is present, keyboard reachable, and integrated with the mobile navigation overlay.
  • The repo now includes a validator for allowlisted page descriptions and tests covering that validator.
  • Focus-visible parity is improved across shared controls including CTA buttons, monster-card links and actions, the theme toggle, the menu toggle, and the back-to-top button.

Implementation notes

Monster filter status and visibility

The filter status already exposes a live region. This is implemented in _includes/monster-index-filter.html with role="status" and aria-live="polite", so this should not be listed as a missing future enhancement.

The clear button is not always visible. It starts hidden and is only shown when the input has content. That behavior is intentional and is handled by the updateClearButton() helper in the same include.

Description validation scope

The page-description validator is intentionally allowlisted, not universal. It covers current visitor-facing routes in scripts/validate_codex_prompts.py via PAGE_DESCRIPTION_PATHS, including core landing pages, hub indexes, spellbook detail pages, and printable pages.

This validator does not attempt to enforce description across every markdown file in the repository. Internal docs such as README.md, CHANGELOG.md, DESIGN.md, PROJECT_MAP_V2.md, ARCHITECTURE.md, and similar repo materials remain out of scope.

Clear-button sizing

The clear button has been made larger and easier to tap, but the implemented size is 2.75rem by 2.75rem. That is a meaningful usability improvement, but it should be described as the current shipped size rather than as a guaranteed 48 px target in every environment.

Optional future polish

These are optional improvements, not unresolved defects in the current signoff:

  • Run a broader accessibility audit with Axe or Lighthouse to catch anything outside the recently touched control set.
  • Expand the allowlisted description validator only if the site grows into new visitor-facing content directories.
  • Revisit the clear-button size again if real mobile testing suggests it should be larger than the current 2.75rem.
  • Continue periodic manual keyboard testing so future UI additions follow the same focus-visible conventions.

Signoff conclusion

The recent remediation and polish work can be considered successfully implemented.

The issues that were true defects are now fixed:

  • the monster filter no longer fails before binding
  • the filter now reports match counts and supports clearing
  • the oracle brings selected results into view
  • low-stim contrast and focus handling are improved
  • allowlisted page-description coverage is now protected in validation

What remains is normal future polish, not an outstanding regression. The codebase is in a defensible state for signoff as long as future changes continue to pass the existing tests and validators.
