Field Notes
Threshold Spell
A micro-transition ritual for shutdown and retreat. Use it when the cave feels safer than the world and you need one doorway, not an expedition.
Use this ritual when Cave Bear has you in full retreat and even replying to a message feels like a cross-country trek. The point is not to spring back to full power. The point is to cross one threshold and see what becomes possible from there.
The spell
I do not need to leave the cave entirely. I only need to reach the doorway.
Three breaths, three moves, then I decide what comes next.
How to use it
- Stand in a literal or figurative doorway: the bedroom door, the reply button, the first sentence of the email.
- Take three slow breaths in the threshold.
- Make three small moves: sit up, feet on floor, stand. Or: open app, read one line, type one word.
- From the doorway, decide: one more step, or rest here. Either answer is legal.
Why it helps
- It shrinks the ask from "rejoin the world" to "reach the door."
- It uses body movement to interrupt the freeze loop.
- It gives you a decision point after motion, not before it.
Use it when
Rest has become retreat, and the gap between "I want to" and "I am doing it" keeps widening.
A text, a doorway step, or a tiny body cue helps more than making a bigger plan.
